Two ABVP activists were arrested on the charge of attacking an AISA member near the Delhi University's North Campus late on Tuesday night but were released on bail, police said on Wednesday.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which suspended its two members on Wednesday, also filed a counter-complaint during the day against All India Students' Association (AISA) members, claiming that one of the two arrested suffered a hand fracture during the scuffle.

The police were yet to act on the counter-complaint.

ABVP members Vinayak Sharma, President of the Students Union at Sri Venkateswara College, and Prashant Mishra of Kirori Mal College, were taken into custody on Tuesday night after a fight with AISA members Aman Sinha, a JNU student, and Utkarsh Bharadwaj, a Delhi University student.

The two ABVP students were identified through closed-circuit television footage, which showed them attacking AISA members with belts near the Vishwavidyalaya Metro station that is close to the campus.

Police arrested Mishra and Sharma from the spot and booked them under Sections 323, (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code, Additional Deputy Commissioner Esha Pandey told IANS.

The two students were later released on bail by the police.

"The ABVP also gave a complaint against Aman Sinha and Utkarsh Bhardwaj for beating Vinayak Sharma and Prashant Mishra. Prashant's hand was fractured," state ABVP Secretary Bharat Kumar told IANS.

The arrests came hours after thousands of students marched through Delhi University on Tuesday to denounce the Ramjas College violence on February 22, allegedly by ABVP activists.

"The student party has suspended Prashant Misra and Vinayak Sharma for getting into a physical fight with AISA activists," ABVP worker Prasanna Vaidya told IANS.

"The two were provoked by AISA activists. They used abusive language," Vaidya said.

"It wasn't that 10-12 ABVP workers attacked one person. There were attacks from both sides. The video clearly shows it. Prashant was badly injured. Vinayak took out his belt and moved it aimlessly; nobody was hurt," he said.

ABVP's national Media Convener Saket Bahuguna meanwhile demanded action against the AISA students.

"We, as a responsible student organisation, immediately took action against our party workers involved in the scuffle. We have suspended them from primary membership to set an example. We will not tolerate violence on DU campus. We wish to restore peace in the university," Bahuguna told IANS.

"... the leftist parties should not bring these outsiders to deliberately create commotion on the campus," he said.
