Senior officials of the West Bengal Police were beaten up after a school girl died in a road accident in Murshidabad district on Friday, police said.
The situation turned ugly after the girl was knocked down by a speeding truck while crossing the National Highway 25 in New Farakka area, police said.
"Some hooligans created a ruckus at the spot by blocking the roads and ransacking buses. They hurled bricks and attacked us with sticks when we reached the spot," a police officer said.
"Some of our senior officers and I got injured," he added.
Following the student's death, several people gathered with iron rods and sticks and ransacked the truck.
The mob attacked police, accusing them of taking bribes from truck drivers and not taking steps against the traffic rule violations.
Television footage showed a mob setting fire to a government bus.
Police denied the allegations and said action would be taken against those who attacked the police.
