President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday inaugurated the five-day-long Namami Brahmaputra river festival here in Assam.
Mukherjee inaugurated the programme by lighting a ceremonial lamp at the Kachamari Ghat near Fancy Bazar in Guwahati.
The President arrived at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport here in a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and headed straight to the venue of Namami Brahmaputra -- India's biggest river festival so far.
Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay also participated in the inauguration ceremony besides Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and senior Assam ministers.
The five-day-long river festival is being organised across 21 districts of Assam through which the mighty Brahmaputra river passes.
The festival is a tribute to Brahmaputra river which is revered as lifeline for the people of Assam.
Assam's culture, heritage, history, music, food, tourism potential and other aspects would be showcased during the festival which will continue till April 4.
