Excess build-up of iron in the body -- Hemochromatosis --can damage the liver. This action is genetic and the excess iron, if left untreated, can damage joints, organs, and eventually be fatal, said doctors on Friday. They said that the disease though being genetic was still a matter of concern because symptoms often don't appear until a person is 40 years of age or older. Stating that physical examination is necessary to diagnose hemochromatosis followed by a blood test to confirm it, Malhotra said that as it is an autosomal recessive disorder, there are 80 per cent chances of it getting passed on to the next generation. | ||||||||
