Aruna's story is the material of a real Shakespearean tragedy. A beautiful girl who was reduced to a vegetative state by the brutal acts of her colleague. Any one who heard her story was reduced to tears. After living 42 years of dead life, Aruna Shanbaug takes last breath on Monday morning at the KEM Hospital. Journalist Pinki Virani asked mercy killing for her, but Supreme Court rejected it with their own reasons. She was working as a staff nurse at the KEM hospital when on November 27, 1973, she was raped by ward boy Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki. She was just 23 at the time of incident, her marriage was fixed, but this incident not only shaked her life but also compelled her to live a dead life on ventilator. In 1966, Aruna, hailing from Haldipur, Shimoga in Karnataka, joins KEM Hospital, Mumbai as a staff nurse. In 1973, Sohanlal had strangled her with a dog chain. The asphyxiation cut off oxygen supply to her brain, leaving her in a vegetative state since then. But again our law had not gave justice to her, Sohanlal was caught and convicted, and served two concurrent seven-year sentences for assault and robbery, but neither for rape or sexual molestation, nor for the alleged "unnatural sexual offence."
